Nero d'Avola is grape variety native to Sicily and named after Avola in the far south of the country. Very much like New World Shiraz it is a full-bodied savoury wine with juicy and ripe tannins and plummy flavours. Excellent with red meat and cheese.
At the end of XIX century, Francesco Rocca started his historical business by selling loose wine. In 1936 his son Angelo enhanced the wine production and built a cellar in Nardò, Apulia. In the 1960's the first bottling line was bought and thus started the distribution of products under the Rocca brand. Today, Ernesto Rocca (the founder's grandson) shares responsibility with his sons Paolo, Marco, Luca and Matteo who help run the family business, a business which also includes a construction company and a leading trot horse stud farm.
